it could be just a passing jolt of optimism on my part, but does there seem to a sense of excitement running through kc right now? especially the music scene?

i've done my fair share of bitching about local music, but for some reason i can't help this feeling that the scene is starting to shake the cobwebs off their amplifiers.

love him or hate him, david cook turned the nation's eyes to kansas city. around the same time, the tigers were on letterman and released keep color, a fantastic record that really is turning heads nationally. ssion is doing god knows what... and doing it well.

just yesterday, a friend of mine showed me a recent issue of alternative press magazine mentioning three kc groups. an article written by one of the architects, a blurb about josephine collective's latest, and an article on the tigers...

basically, i'm excited again for the potential of kansas city music. it's like seeing a shaft of light in a cave in...

i suppose this means i'm officially announcing my hypocrisy.

Things seem to come in waves here in KC. I've been dealing in some way with our music scene since '93. That time was by FAR the best era I've witnessed in live music in this area. The bands got paid better and there was a grassroots thing going on where you could play a venue on a Tues. night and still have a fan base there. This helped to further propel the music scene. What's funny is the Internet wasn't really being used by most bands back then but we did have an awesome music publication out of Lawrence called The Note that offered great exposure for local and regional bands. The exposure now should come much more easily but I find it just as hard to spread the name of my current band around.

I do think we are picking up steam here a bit lately. Hopefully we are on to something. You just never know with the people of KC...they seem easily distracted as a whole quite often. Maybe they'll put their head in the game and we can get things going strong again??!
