in response to laurie's blog about her feline medical bills, i have this to say: it's always an impossibly tough decision. lucky for me, none of my little villains have racked up significant charges. not sure that i should tell this to the public, but i don't even take my cats in for shots anymore because they're strictly indoor only and some vets simply charge too much.

that said, if anything ever happened to my little doom tumor, i would move mountains to make sure he was a-okay. since i'm relatively new to the area and only know a handful of people, he is without a doubt my best bud. yes, i have another cat now, but she's skittish and weird and not the greatest companion in the world.

growing up, we had a cat that somehow crawled into the dryer from the outside vent. my family spent upwards of $1,000 trying to nurse her back to health, but with little luck. she eventually was put down because the bills were too high and she was obviously in pain. that was a hard day in my childhood.

In March of this year I adopted a blind 7 YO Pekingese, a puppy mill rescue from Nebraska. She was frail and had a blood sugar crisis right after I brought her home. I took her right away to Mission MedVet in Mission, KS and a couple of days later she came home, after incurring over $1000 in damages. Ouch! But I'm glad I took her. A couple of weeks later my 11 YO black lab had an episode with 2 herniated discs in his neck and spine, and away we went to Mission MedVet again. His bill was $660. So in less than a month, over $1600 in vet bills. I would pay anything for my doggies, so long as their quality of life is maintained. They give back so much more than we give them, there isn't anything I wouldn't do for them.

100% agree. i think i could live without hi-def for a bit if my kids needed some medical coverage. too bad nobody offers medical insurance for animals. note to self: start pet insurance company.

edit: apparently pet health coverage is real. who knew??

actually you can get medical insurance for pets. I worked at a pet store in NY for awhile and we had flyers for a pet insurance company. it's really expensive though, and I forgot the name. But it does exist Smile

I have had the medical insurance for pets, thanks VPI Insurance, and it saved me tremendously. My rottweiler had cancer and without the insurance would have been faced with euthanasia or a series of multiple treatments. Thankfully for the $30.00 bucks a month, they covered $3500 in surgery. Unfortunately the treatment didn't work, but I have purchased it for my new scotty.
