Green Lantern is pretty great at the moment. Batman has always been my fave.

I prefer the darker comics myself. The Specter, The Shade, Transmetropolitan (about a completely insane, militant newspaper columnnist in the future). For something brand new you should take a look at Screamland, a really beautiful, witty comic about outta work movie monsters (namely, Frank). And -- it's created by K.C. people.

Planetary is one of the smartest, well written comics out there, and with one issue remaining in its run, you could practically experience the whole story without having to wait through the excruciatingly long periods between issues.
It's done by Warren Ellis and John Cassaday, two of the best talents in the industry. It puts a new spin on classic comic book mythos while keeping its own distinct story firmly intact.
Also, Y: The Last Man just came to its conclusion. It's another smartly written, well drawn sci-fi comic from Bryan K. Vaughn, a writer that's gone on to be the current story editor for Lost. Everything Liz mentioned is good too.
Oh, and Joss Whedon (from Buffy: The Vampire Slayer) and John Cassaday's runs on Astonishing X-Men are great too.

Been reading the Angel comics, supposed to pick up where season 5 of the t.v. show left off. There are some interesting elements but it's been kind of a letdown.
