Make that out-of-country guests.

My aunt is visiting from Singapore for the next week or so. And if there's anything Asian families like to do when they congregate, it's eat. So I've come up with a comprehensive list of places to take her that will showcase our local flavor as well as making sure she gets food she wouldn't otherwise get in Singapore. If anyone's got other ideas, hit me up, because she'll be in town for a bit.

1. BBQ - Jack Stack. I don't know how much she'll like BBQ, but Jack Stack's one of the best in town, esp for "upscale" BBQ, so to speak. But if it's a Gates vs. Bryant's battle, I vote Gates. OK Joe's is a runner-up as well.

2. Steak - Hereford House at 20th & Main. I'm not big on steak and the last time I visited Hereford was the Indep location, and I wasn't impressed. But I figure the original downtown location probably won't do me wrong. I'm still up for steak suggestions though.

3. Home cookin' - Stroud's.Not much else will give someone a taste of Americana as well as a joint with family-style portions and deep fried-everything. I don't indulge on fried food much, but when I do, Stroud's is the best place to get my fix.

4. Pizza - Minsky's. It was between this and Waldo, which is still a possibility. I've rarely gone wrong with Minsky's though, and their calzones always seem to bring me back.

5. Italian - Cascone's. Toss-up between this and Garozzo's. I can't decide.

6. Mexican - Ponak's. Great salsa, great cheese dip, dangerous margaritas. Reminds me of my youth when my folks would take me there (before the flood) and good times with friends. There are many good Mexican eats on the Boulevard, but I always seem to choose Ponak's.

7. Sammiches - d'Bronx. New York deli style-ish. Good pizza too. But might just head to Planet Sub.

8. Burgers - Westport Flea Market. Not too emphatic on this one. I don't normally seek out burgers, and if I want a really good one I'll attempt to make it myself. So I'll definitely take suggestions here, though WFM is pretty tasty. McCoy's and Winstead's... not bad either.

9. Breakfast - Big Biscuit. Johnny Cascone's in the City Market is good too, but I love Big Biscuit in Indep for the price and the best biscuits and gravy in town.

I'm thinking Chubby's deserves a nod, not because the food is really all that good but it's definitely a place that any KC visitor should hit. I don't know that she'll want to check it out at 3 a.m. like I frequently have, but... Jazz is another possibility to get some Cajun cuisine. I'm not mentioning Asian food since she can get it better and cheaper in Singapore. But I will mention if I were taking her to eat Chinese, it'd be Blue Koi. Maybe Bo Ling's for dim sum.

If you've made it all the way through and I've missed some other type of American/non-Singaporean/KC mainstay, let me know.

I think you covered all of the big ones - my suggestions/additions would be: BBQ - Rosedale's on SW Trfwy in KCK and Breakfast - Mama's on 39th. I take all of my out-of-townies there and people LOVE 'em.

Have a great time visiting!

Grinders -- Crossroads

Harry's Country Club -- City Market

Both have great food, and an even better atmosphere.

How about for steaks- the Majestic downstairs, so you also have some KC jazz to listen to!

The Peachtree Buffet on Eastwood Trafficway. It's the best soul food you ever had. There's also an upscale dining location in Lee's Summit and one coming soon to the P&L. Don't sleep.

Thanks everyone for the recommendations! This topic was exactly what I needed! I am moving to KC on Sunday and I love going out to eat. I am always keen on finding unique places.. Now, I just need to meet some dining partners! (and post-food drinking spots!)

I've gotta rep for Lawrence...

Everyone will say Free State, because that's the most popular restaurant here, but I don't go there much. Good beer, but there's other places I'd rather eat. Like:

1. Local Burger. Best burgers in town. They've got locally raised beef, buffalo, and elk meat AND they make an awesome veggie burger. Try the apple-mustard salad dressing, which is divine on their locally-grown greens. Really healthy, really sunny, really eco-friendly.

2. Papa Keno's. It's back, bitches! And it's the best pizza in town. Way better than Rudy's.

3. Wa. I've heard from people who know that the sushi here rivals anything you'd eat in L.A. or New York. It's awesome. Or try Yokohama: my fellow Lawrencian Trevan says their sushi's tops.

4. La Parilla. I just ate there last night. It's a Lawrence institution, with reasonably priced South American-inspired dishes and fresh margaritas and sangria. Perfect summer eatery.

5. Burrito King. For $3, you get a Chipotle-sized burrito to go that always tastes just right after a late night of drinkin'. Open until 3 a.m..
