What does everyone do to keep the balance and keeping it fun when you are balancing being a parent, a spouse and just YOU...so that each "hat" you wear gets its time?
Quite honestly I would have to say good luck to that. It's not about giving fair time to all of your "hats" but rather managing how long you wear each hat.
I have 4 daughters ranging from 8 to 1. 2 are in softball and in grade school. Between the being the Assistant coach, helping in their classrooms, my day job, my night job, my freelance letterpress/design work, my wife's PTA obligations and her meeting for the School Board no hat really gets worn for very long at a time. Ya just learn to roll with it! It all sounds busy but there seems to be time for everything if you know how to manage your time.
What it really comes down to for me is I am in it for my kids. If I am not home my wife is. I pull in extra work so she does not need to and I am fine with that. Usually the extra work is done after hours once the kids are in bed or on a weekend where we can still have a fun family activity. I try to avoid overlapping work with family outings. Lucky for me one of my hobbies just happens to make me money. Some hats just need to sit on the shelf for a bit and you need to come to terms with that. Some might call it sacrificing I would call it prioritizing. I mean, I can have fun on my own messing with hot rods and stuff I like to do but the most fun for me is doing something the whole family can enjoy. There is nothing better than seeing the faces of your children light up and I can't see that if I am turning a wrench under my hot rod.
