Pamela Spencer

I am a 27-year-old Kansas City transplant from Michigan. I am in no way a dating expert. In fact, I often have a love-hate relationship with dating. But when it comes to talking about dating, it's all love.

Or even a booty call? Gas went up again. Times are not cheap. (But here's some cheap date ideas if you are looking.) Which makes me wonder, how far are people willing to go for dates with gas prices so high?

My Novio is visiting from Colombia and he's staying with his fam up north of the river. It hurts our pockets a little bit driving back and forth, but we rarely get to see each other so we do it and I don't mind at all.

But the driving is temporary.

What about people who have to do that on a regular basis? Are couples dating "long-distance" between Harrisonville and Liberty or KC and Wichita giving up right now? Or just deciding to move in together? If a relationship between a KC person and a Lawrence resident was just on the edge of blooming, do you think they're deciding to call it quits?

Or let's say you meet someone awesome on an online dating site or at a bar. They live in Excelsior Springs and you live in Brookside. This is a drive you might have considered before, but now you wonder if it's worth the gas money for somebody you may or may not end up liking. And if you drive 30 miles for a date somewhere, are you pissed if you don't get a kiss?

I would be.

But I hate driving.

I once crossed a boy off my list because he lived somewhere off Barry Road. No thank you. A few years ago I considered driving to Overland Park for a date a huge compromise on my part. I did it because the guy was really hot. Plus he bought dinner and good wine, and gas wasn't $4.

Things didn't work out, but I should have stayed friends with him. He owned a gas station.

I lived in England and dated someone from Kansas City. Flew backwards and forwards on a regular basis. What with that and the phone bills, it was a pretty expensive relationship. On the other hand, it was more than just "dating" and I did truly believe I'd met the person I was supposed to spend my future with, just happened they lived 6,000 miles away. We did get married, and I ended up moving here because of that. Ultimately we ended up getting divorced 5 years later, so I guess my judgment was a little off. But if I hadn't followed my heart I would always have regretted it. For just casual "dating", I'm honestly not sure how far I'd drive at this point. I live in Lawrence and my dating life and social life is pretty much all in KC, and thats close enough it doesn't bother me at all.
I'm right there with ya! Gas prices or no...driving, driving, driving to keep connected with someone gets old...fast!
My boyfriend moved to KC from Milwaukee about a month ago and I spent my vacation down in KC about two weeks ago. The drive from Milwaukee to KC and back is not outrageously long but long enough when you are the sole driver. While in KC I fell in love with the city. We both decided that that there is no "relationship" in a "long-distance relationship", and that only phone calls and traveling to visit when our schedules would allow would soon take its toll on us. So, I will be moving down to KC at the end of this August. Hey, if Milwaukee isn't good for Miller Beer, why should it be good me? :-) I will miss Milwaukee but I am really looking forward to exploring Kansas City! P.S. I love Ink newspaper and website...Much more organized with a better feel for the city and all it has to offer for all walks of life. It puts the now shut-down MKE Magazine and Shepherd Express to shame. The Onion, although, will always be a local favorite of mine :-)
Long Distance relationships are a challenge, and one may end up having to leave a good job, friends, and family to try to make it work. Unless it's a 'soul-mate', I thinks it's best to stay local. I'll drive 25 miles in any direction to be with a nice girl ..... 50 if I think there's a good chance I'll get laid ... any Lawrence girls with a "Kansas" t-shirt that I can borrow to sleep in tonight ?
