Local indie band Capybara's latest accomplishment? The band members scored a film in the Sundance Film Festival.

Darin Seal and Mark Harrison from local group Capybara were nice enough to invite me over to their new Westport digs Thursday night to chat about their latest venture — putting together the score for the film “One Too Many Mornings,” which recently premiered at the Sundance Film Festival. Seal was the driving force behind the score (he’s done similar work on other films), with help from Harrison, Joel Wrolstad and Jared Horne on a few tracks. The band is excited about the opportunity to use their music in a new way and even more amped about the film itself, and they encourage any and everyone to download it ASAP.
Emily: How did you get involved with “One Too Many Mornings?”?
Mark: I met (director) Mike Mohan last year at Sundance. He was my boss. We saw (the film) at a screening in L.A. It just happened that we were in town the day it was going to screen. Mike was such a huge fan of Capybara. For the longest time he was probably our most avid fan.
Darin: When we had, you know, four fans.
Mark: The guy (originally tapped for the score) does all the music for “SpongeBob,” so when “SpongeBob” got picked up for another 36 episodes, he got busy and Mike had to come to us.
E: You had to put this together quickly. You had a month?
Mark: No, no literally 10 days.
Darin: Yeah, it was 10 days. The score was made in ten days. The director sent me some songs that had elements he liked in them. We talked about all the things they had in common. They all had electronic elements — not like techno, but synthesized elements — they were all pretty quiet and they were all really stripped down. He didn’t want things that had a lot of layers
Mark: It was really like the movie is. The film is such a humble story that was very accessible. It’s very honest and stripped down.
E: Best part?
Darin: My favorite part about it is that I made a ringtone for when his phone goes in the first scene and that’s part of the download for you to put on your phone. That’s sweet. You’ve made it, right, if you have a ringtone?
E: How has this affected you as a band?
Mark: I think as a band we, for the first time, are facing reality. You invest a lot of time and energy at the beginning to show your commitment to a project, and now we’re trying to find new ways that Capybara can help us be able to make ends meet. We would love to take advantage of the fact that we have four very creative people in this band. If nothing else, this specific project proved that we have a very fast turnaround
Darin: Do you know how much a movie will spend to license a movie’s worth of indie-band music?
E: A lot.
Mark: I’m not about to say that I know my stance on whether or not we would give like Hummer access to some of our songs. …
Darin: We would.
Mark: … that raises a lot of other questions for us as a band.
Darin: Mostly, how many swimming pools do I want built in my backyard?
Mark: But luckily that isn’t a problem yet.
