Anna Nielsen Bock, 27, and Nicolas Bock, 31

Wedding date: Sept. 20, 2008

Altar alternative: This artsy pair married on the lower deck of the 12th Street Bridge in the West Bottoms — a site the groom calls “more monumental than any church in Kansas City, if a little more rough around the edges.”

The location’s “rough simplicity” impressed even traditional guests, Nicolas Bock said.

Location inspiration: “Anna and I would explore many of the bridges around urban and industrial Kansas City in the beginning of our relationship,” said Nicolas Bock, an architect and local historian. “I love the dramatic context of the century-old buildings and the slight industrial noise of the area.”

The rite stuff: The Bocks acquired a city permit to shut down the lower deck of the bridge during their wedding. Nicolas Bock and his groomsmen hauled 100 white wooden chairs from their reception site, the Foundation, to the bridge in the maid of honor’s Dodge pickup. The couple suspended three 25-inch-long pieces of white fabric to create a backdrop.

“Nearly everything used in our wedding was local, seasonal and/or reusable,” said Anna Nielsen Bock, who wore a dress handmade by her seamstress sister.

The reception featured catering by Badseed and suds from Boulevard Brewing Co.

“I guess you could say Kansas City was the theme of our wedding,” Anna Nielsen Bock said.

The only hitch: A locomotive rumbled through during the ceremony. Thinking fast, the minister had the couple turn around so guests could applaud them as the train blared its horn beneath, Nicolas Bock said. “It almost seemed staged.”
