Mellissa Knight and Michael Currie, both 29

Altar alternative: Knight and Currie exchanged vows in Pilgrim Chapel, a cottage-style church in midtown.

Its gothic-inspired stone walls, ornate stained glass and plush shrubbery immediately wooed the couple.

“It’s almost kind of medieval, like having your own little room in a castle,” Knight said. “People who live here said, ‘Wow, I didn’t know there was something this pretty in downtown Kansas City.’ ”

Location inspiration: “I had always thought that I would have an outdoor wedding, and my husband had always thought that he would have a Catholic wedding in a large cathedral,” Knight said. “I had lived down the street from the chapel for over a year and never really understood what it was. I just knew that I liked it.”

The rite stuff: “Our theme was sort of like old-love-meets-new,” said Knight, who wore a “modern vintage” gown in old gold and mauve.

The couple hosted the reception at Hotel Savoy, a supposedly haunted bed and breakfast with a dramatic domed lobby and Corinthian columns.

“It’s a place that picks you up and puts you in the middle of an elegant party taking place over a century ago,” Knight said. “Historic buildings have so much style.”

The only hitch: A pair of stray cats wandered onto the scene during wedding photos. “The minister had to chase them around,” Knight said. “It was nice for them to show up — I didn’t send them an invitation. Little nomads.”
