The girls are still frightened.

I stepped into what seemed like an innocuous lingerie-and-swimsuit boutique with Cherryh last Friday. An account of what happened:

"Welcome to Woodpeckers*! Have you been here before?" chirped two over-caffeinated saleswomen in singsong unison.

 

"Um... no."

 

Immediately, one swooped over to a sales rack full of swimwear. "This would be great for your body type!" she gushed to Cherryh, who silently admired the mesh splayed before her.

 

I cowered, hoping to remove myself from the woman's line of fire. Too late.

 

"And for YOU!" she cooed, fanning out a white ribbed one-piece. "This would look great, AND because you have dark hair, you won't look washed out!"

 

"Great."

 

Truth was, I had no interest in any swimsuit, much less one that wouldn't make me look washed out. I haven't donned swimwear in nearly a decade. And I'm OK with that.

 

The other woman, to me: "What kind of bra can I help you find today?"

 

"I, uh, actually don't have an occasion to wear nice underwear, so I'm not looking for anything," I replied curtly.

 

"What are you, a 36C?"

 

She wasn't getting it. No means no!

 

"We just got this in, and this is exactly your size." She unfolded something blue and lacy on the glass countertop "And we have matching panties!"

 

The door chimed, and two unsuspecting targets entered.

 

"Hi! Welcome to Woodpeckers! Have you been here before?"

 

As Cherryh and I ran for safety, she said, "You look like you wanted to die."

 

Well, not quite. But I did want to give those ladies a lesson on inappropriate peddling.

 

What do you say to overly aggressive salespeople?

You were really shrinking into the wall. I was like, "We gotta get outta here before you die." It was a good bonding experience though. LOL!

I don't go bra shopping but with the aggressive saleman or woman you just got to be as rude as they are. takes about 5 seconds and if any other employee is watching they usually learn quick and wait until you've browsed a bit and ask if you need assistance.
