I'm officially on a diet after getting the results of my annual blood tests.

A postcard from my doctor's office announcing the test results showed up last week.

Normally everything is fine and the card goes in the trash.

This time, my cholesterol topped out at 211 and the bad cholestrol was also, um, bad.

My first question: Does wine have cholesterol? No? t-h-a-n-k y-o-u!!!!

What the heck have I been eating?

Let's see: Rabbit stew at the Fou, enough cheese to make Wisconsin blush and steak, steak and more steak at home.

I went through my pantry and pulled out all the foods with no cholestrol to see what I will be eating this week.

Right now I'm sitting at my desk eating a canteloupe. There's a jar of peanut butter and bottle of local honey on my desk, and I ate edamame for breakfast.

Yesterday for dinner I guess I ate bar olives and a half a bottle of wine at Mosaic with my mother-in-law before the Bruce Springsteen concert.

It's actually something I need to watch, as the men on my dad's side of the fam die of sudden, no-warning heart attacks. His father, great uncle and brother all died that way. And Dad had big-time open heart two years ago when his doc discovered he was like 80 percent clogged.

Anyone else watching their cholesterol? Would love to know what's good to eat - and what's really bad.

Eat close to the earth. It's shocking how few people realize the largest contributers of diabetes, obesity, cardio complications, and cancer stem from animal origin. Our bodies are sensitive. Just about anyone in North America can name an older relative that passed of sudden health complications. There are two types of cholesterol. The "good" cholesterol, or HDL, decreases your risk of heart disease and the "bad" cholesterol, or LDL, increases your risk of heart disease. Good cholesterol is found in unsaturated fats, which are contained mostly in plant oils. Sources of good cholesterol include nuts, olive oil, canola oil, avocados, sunflower seeds, and sesame seeds. Bad cholesterol is found in saturated fats and trans-fatty acids, which are found in animal products and processed foods. Sources of bad cholesterol include red meat, poultry fat, butter, milk, dairy products, coconut oil, margarine, shortening, and processed foods. Try eating more vegetarian options. When I first went vegan a few years ago, my health stats gradually increased, as well as my energy levels, outlook on life, and so on. And I developed a great new clear conscience. Most educated and legitimate nutritionists and doctors will tell you the same. Reduce (avoid) meat and dairy intake for longevity and rich health. Whether you limit or eliminate is up to you. Some people still choose to eat chicken or fish for mild proteins, while others go all the way and eliminate meat all-together. You should have gone to Green Fest to learn more! ;)
Really? You goto the doctor annually? You're so young. Why? I guarentee you 90% of the world's population doesn't. What the hell are they gonna do for you? Throw stats at you and predict your life span? I'm not really picking on you, just the ideal. I'm quite confident the 100 plus year old people didn't spend any real time seeing a physician throughout their years. I've just turned 50 and I've not seen the doc other than to have my tonsils out when I was about 4, set a broken bone when I was 7, once for gallstones, and a couple times for antibiotics to shake the flu or help with getting rid of poison ivy. The key to good health is MODERATION! Don't go over eating/over doing anything. Including a vegan diet. They don't live forever either...hehe. I'm curious to know what the hell they think animals are here for to begin with. To look at? And only fish or aquatic creatures are good for you? Gimme a break! A good mixture of many things is probably the best. In the end...you're out when your number is up. Yes, even athletes and vegans get hit by cars, or fall off ladders, or over extend themselves in one way or another and their time on the planet ends at any given time. Don't stress over it. Even that in itself is reaching the number one killer in our "modern" world. Go figure...
Wow, L-Dogg..that sucks. You already know what I will say, right? Exercise daily. Maybe we can go on some bike rides when I get my new bike
