So Kobe won the NBA MVP. That's excuse enough to drop a top-10 list. So here, in no particular order, are the top 10 players of all time.
Kareem Abdul-Jabbar: Check the stats. Six-time MVP, six NBA titles, 19-time All Star, No. 4 all-time rebounder, No. 3 all-time shot blocker, No. 1 all-time scorer. Need anything else?
Michael Jordan: 'Nuff said.
Wilt Chamberlain: Let's just keep it 100, OK?
Bill Russell: More championship rings than fingers.
Oscar Robertson: In 1961-62, the Big O averaged a triple-double -- 30.8 points per game, 12.5 rebounds, 11.4 assists. And in four other seasons he was within one rebound or assist of doing it again.
Magic Johnson: It's all about making your teammates better, right? Well, Magic made James Worthy a Hall of Famer and turned a bunch of average to slightly above average players into All Stars. Also he won three MVPs and led the Lakers to five NBA titles.
Larry Bird: Let's ignore those ugly-ass Skechers, OK? Bird won the MVP three years straight and he led the Celtics to three NBA titles.
Julius Erving: If you've never seen Dr. J's ABA highlights then you know a lot less about basketball than you think you know.
George Mikan: You'll love to hear this story again and again of how it all got started way back when ... the Minneapolis Lakers were on the road to play the New York Knicks on Dec. 13, 1949, and, according to NBA.com, the marquee over Madison Square Garden read: "Geo. Mikan vs. Knicks".
Isiah Thomas: Led the Bad Boys to two NBA titles -- and went through Jordan, Magic and Larry to do it. And let's not forget that with the exception of Joe Dumars, the Bad Boys weren't all that great as individual players, but under Isiah's leadership they became a great team. Also, in game six of the 1987-88 finals against the Lakers, Isiah scored 43 points, including a record 25 points in the third quarter. And he did it on one foot.
Don't get me wrong, Kobe is great. But Tiny Archibald didn't even make this list, and he led the league in scoring and assists in the same season (and did it here in KC at that.) Neither did Big Shaq, Tim Duncan, or Jerry West ... and he's the logo.
