Architect Dominique Davison performed what she called a “modern intervention” on an 80-year-old Brookside home this year.
The Prairie-style house, occupied by a family of four, wasn’t designed for the modern family. There was no bathroom on the main floor, no guest room and scarce storage space in the kitchen.Davison, the principal architect at Davison Architecture + Urban Design , brought the home into the 21st century by adding a half-bath and a room above the garage that can be used as a home gym, a den, a home theater and a guest room. She also updated the home’s look. The kitchen now boasts sleek white cabinetry, stainless steel countertops and chic wood paneling. You can see Davison’s work at 6:30 p.m. Friday at Monsters of Design, an annual design competition organized by the Young Architects Forum of Kansas City. This year’s 36 entries vary from designs for a children’s microscope to an Olathe hair salon.Monsters of Design “is a really nice way for young designers to showcase what they’re doing,” said Davison, 36. “Everyone works really hard to design something eye-catching and intriguing.”The event isn’t just for architects, said organizers Ryan Townsend and Stephen Colin. Graphic, industrial and interior designers can enter as long as they live within 250 miles of Kansas City and they’re younger than 40. A panel of judges from outside Kansas City chooses the winners each year. This eliminates preconceptions and biases, said Bryce Ludwig, a contest organizer and designer at 3 Axis in Kansas City, Kan.This year’s judges hail from Portland, Ore., and include a magazine editor, firm executives and a designer for Nike.If you’re in the design biz, the event is a good way to network, Davison said. And if you aren’t? Well, it’s still a good party.“There’s food and booze and a lot of design-savvy people,” Davison said.infobox-hr-separator /> infobox-head>Monsters of Design
