Valentine’s Day Guide: 19 events in Kansas City and Lawrence

Burlesque Downtown Underground opens its 2012 season with "Aphrodite Awakening," a two-day Valentine's Day-inspired performance.

Couples can sy "I Do!" at the City market in the annual "Tie the Knot" event. Last year, James Sanders II and Robin Groves embraced after exchanging rings.

Kate E. Burke's embroidery art will be available at the Ladies of Lawrence Artwork(LOLA) group Valentines Show.

Awava products will be available at the LOLA Valentine's show in Lawrence. This is a kisero bag by Ugandan artist, Wasswa Donald.

What: The St. Valentine’s Day Massacre party features music by Thrust, Burn Halo, Skooter Trash and Slam Pig. Doors open at 7 p.m. Tickets are $10 in advance and $13 at the door.

Beaumont Club

When: 7 p.m., Feb. 10

Where: 4050 Pennsylvania Ave.

What: The Millennial League’s annual Val-O-Ween bash, which is sponsored by Ink, includes music by the Beautiful Bodies and DJ Sheppa. This year’s theme is “Scary Carrie Prom.” Proceeds from the event benefit the AIDS Service Foundation of Greater Kansas City, which distributes funds to local AIDS service organizations. Tickets are $20 in advance or $25 at the door. VIP tickets are $75.

Bluestem

When: Dinner: 6 p.m., 7:30 p.m. and 9 p.m., Feb. 14. Tea: 11 a.m. and 1 p.m., Feb. 11.

Where: 900 Westport Road

What: The Westport-area restaurant offers a three-course Valentine’s Day dinner with three seatings (see above). Price is $65 per person. There will also be a Valentine’s tea on Feb. 11 with two seatings. Cost is $25 per person ($7 for children younger than 10), which includes teas, sandwiches and pastries. Reservations are required for both events.

Californos

When: 6:30 p.m., Feb. 13 and 14

Where: 4124 Pennsylvania Ave.

What: Jazz singers Shay Estes (Monday) and Monique Danielle (Tuesday) perform live, French-themed love songs during the two-night “Valentine’s Day in Paris” event presented by Fine Arts Chorale. Californos will serve a buffet dinner each night, along with free chocolates and a champagne toast. Tickets are $49 each.

City Market

When: Noon to 3 p.m., Feb. 14

Where: First pavilion in the City Market

What: The Rev. John Navarre serves as the official for a three-hour “Tie the Knot” event in which couples who are Missouri residents can be married or renew their vows for free on Valentine’s Day. Space is limited, but ceremonies will be held every 15 minutes, with flowers provided by Dutch Flowers and wedding cupcakes from Bloom Baking Co. Reservations required.

The Fishtank: “Romantic Fools”

When: Feb. 2-19

Where: Fishtank Performance Studio, 1715 Wyandotte St.

What: “Romantic Fools,” a two-character live-sketch comedy from writer Richard Orloff, shines a light on the complexities and idiocies of love. Tickets are $10 in advance and $15 at the door.

The Fishtank: “My Cinematic Valentine”

When: 7:30 p.m., Feb. 13

Where: Fishtank Performance Studio, 1715 Wyandotte St.

What: The “My Cinematic Valentine, Or Love’s Lost Reels & Deleted Scenes” show makes its third appearance at the Fishtank as nine performers take a stroll down memory lane to share their own love stories. Jason Beers provides the music, and tickets are $5 to $15.

Howl at the Moon

When: Feb. 11

What: The dueling piano bar’s “Love Sux” party includes anti-Valentine’s themed drinks such as the “X Boyfriend” cocktail and 86-ounce “Bad Romance” buckets. There are games and prizes, and those who bring in a mutilated picture of an ex get in free. Cover is $10.

Kauffman Center for the Performing Arts

When: Feb. 17-26

Where: 1601 Broadway

What: The Kansas City Ballet performs “Romeo & Juliet” by Sergei Prokofiev. The work, based on William Shakespeare’s romantic tragedy, has been an audience favorite since it was first performed in 1940 by the Kirov Ballet in Leningrad. The Kansas City Ballet’s performance will be choreographed by Ib Andersen, whose work is often rooted in the classicism of George Balanchine and Michel Fokine. Tickets start at $19.

What: The Unicorn Theatre’s first production of 2012 tackles the complexity of love in Geoffrey Nauffts’ “Next Fall,” which follows the five-year relationship of Luke and Adam, a gay couple who fall on opposite ends of the religious spectrum. Tickets are $22.50-$37.50.

What: Chef Robert Krause hosts “Culinary Hearts,” a Valentine’s dinner with a healthy twist. The event benefits Van Go’s “Go Healthy” program, which encourages teens to be healthy. The three-course dinner, which includes wine, dessert and live music, is $125 per person and $250 per couple, and festive attire is encouraged. Reservations should be made by Jan. 25.
