Summer guide to fun in Kansas City

Summer in the city. It never gets here fast enough.

Robert Morris’ ‘Glass Labyrinth’

Once derided by naysayers as a ridiculous desecration of the previously pristine south lawn of the Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art when they were installed in 1994, the giant Shuttlecocks have come to be one of the signature symbols of Kansas City. Commissioned to mark the 25th anniversary of the Donald J. Hall Sculpture Park, Robert Morris’ “Glass Labyrinth” may become similarly beloved. Featuring 7-foot-high glass walls, the labyrinth consists of a single path within a 62-foot triangle.

When: Ongoing

Where: Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art, 4525 Oak St.

Cost: Free

Info: nelson-atkins.org

Paul McCartney

Paul McCartney may forever be known as “the cute one,” but the perpetually boyish star will be 72 when he performs at the Sprint Center in July. The former Beatle was at full strength during his rapturously received concert at the Sprint Center in 2010. Even so, he’s only human. McCartney may look and act as if he’s drinking from the fountain of youth, but July’s performance is likely to be his final full-scale concert in Kansas City. It’s now or never for fans who long to shout along to “Live or Let Die,” chime in on “Hey Jude” or shed a wistful tear during “Let It Be.”

When: 8 p.m. July 16

Where: Sprint Center

Cost: $27.50-$250

Info: sprintcenter.com

Justin Timberlake

Even before Michael Jackson died in 2009, Justin Timberlake was modeling many aspects of his career on the work of the cultural icon. The two volumes of “The 20/20 Experience” Timberlake released in 2013 serve as worthy tributes to Jackson’s musical legacy. Rooted in the dance music of Jackson’s “Off the Wall” and “Thriller” albums, Timberlake’s recent hits like “Mirrors” are brilliant homages to M.J. Timberlake’s live presentation is similarly magnificent.

When: 8 p.m. July 30 and 31

Where: Sprint Center

Cost: $45-$175

Info: sprintcenter.com

Shawn and Marlon Wayans

If there were a scoreboard keeping tabs on the statuses of show business families, the Wayanses might find themselves in the lead. Large clans including the Jacksons, the Kardashians and the Marsalises have racked up impressive notoriety, but the Wayanses boast both quantity and quality. The youngest of 10 siblings, Marlon and Shawn have watched older brothers and sisters including Damon, Keenen Ivory and Kim thrive in the film and television industries. Shawn and Marlon are best known for their work on TV’s “In Living Color” and “The Wayans Bros.,” but they’ll showcase their skills as stand- up comedians at Kansas City Improv in July.

When: 8 and 10:30 p.m. July 11; 7, 9:15 and 11:15 p.m. July 12 and 7 p.m. July 13

Where: Kansas City Improv, 7260 N.W. 87th St.

Cost: $35-$40

Info: improvkc.com

Great Midwest Balloon Festival

Catching a glimpse of an enormous balloon on the horizon incites a momentary thrill in people who harbor a fascination for the delightful airborne vehicles. That opportunity will prove irresistible for many area residents at the Great Balloon Festival in August. Balloon rides will be available for an additional fee, but everyone can watch all the balloons simultaneously inflate at 7:30 p.m. on Friday and Saturday. Additional attractions include a barbecue competition, doughnut- and pie-eating contests, the Kansas City Kite Club’s exhibition of giant kites and a Kidz Zone.

When: 4 p.m. Aug. 8, 6:30 a.m. Aug. 9 and 5:30 a.m. Aug. 10

Where: Kansas Speedway

Cost: Tickets start at $15 for adults (ages 15 and above) and $7.50 for youth (ages 4-14) in advance. Children 3 and under are free.

Info: midwestballoonfest.org

Kansas City Irish Fest

While St. Patrick’s Day continues to be celebrated by Kansas Citians of all nationalities, many lovers of all things Irish make the annual Kansas City Irish Fest their primary locally based Irish-themed party. One of the largest events of its type in the nation, the Kansas City Irish Fest is a massive three-day blowout. Many revelers content themselves with the scholarly heritage presentations, comedy shows or children’s activities. Others indulge in whiskey tastings and the torrents of flowing beer. The lineup of international musicians is the primary appeal for most. Carbon Leaf, a longstanding jam-band from Virginia, and Gaelic Storm, a Celtic rock band from California, are among this year’s entertainers.

When: 5 p.m. Aug. 29, 11 a.m. Aug. 30 and 31

Where: Crown Center

Cost: Single-day admission tickets are $10 in advance.
