MLS Playoffs

SUNDAY

Well at least one team in this town knows how to win some games. Sporting KC recently wrapped up an 18-7-9 regular season and solidified the No. 1 seed in the MLS’s Eastern Conference playoffs, which begin this week. Following a round-one bye, Peter Vermes’ team opens a two-game Eastern Conference semifinal matchup Sunday at 2:30 on the road — they’ll play the winner of the first-round matchup between the fourth-seeded Chicago Fire and the fifth-seeded Houston Dynamo — before returning to Kansas City for an 8 p.m. return leg next Wednesday at Livestrong Sporting Park. Tickets to next Wednesday’s match are $25-$225 at sportingkc.com.

Lyric Opera presents ‘Il Trovatore’

SATURDAY THROUGH NOV. 11

The long-standing, four-part opera from Giuseppe Verdi was first performed in Rome in 1853 and has since established itself as one of the world’s most-performed operas. The Lyric Opera performs the opera four times in the coming weeks: Saturday at 7:30 p.m., Nov. 7 and 9 at 7:30 p.m. and Nov. 11 at 2 p.m. All performances are held in the Muriel Kauffman Theatre at the Kauffman Center for the Performing Arts. Tickets are $31 to $161 at kauffmancenter.org or by calling 816-994-7222.

Women of Faith: Celebrate What Matters

FRIDAY AND SATURDAY

The Christian conference features a number of Christian speakers and performers, from musician CeCe Winans to author Liz Curtis Higgs, as well as Bible-based conversation aimed at inspiring a legion of women. The event runs from 7-10 p.m. Friday and 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday. Standard two-day passes are $99, though Saturday-only ($49) and limited view ($39) tickets are also available. Go to womenoffaith.com for more information.

Screenland Slams ‘Tremors’

SATURDAY

If you’ve forgotten how Screenland’s popular “slams” work, here’s a quick refresher: Three comedians out of a stable of five — Tom Lancaster, Daisy Bucket, Adam Hoelscher, Caroline Knecht and Kenzie West — devote a couple of hours to humorously picking apart a less-than-stellar work of American cinematography. This weekend’s unfortunate target is the 1990 Kevin Bacon film “Tremors.” To add to your viewing pleasure, there’s a full bar on site. The slam begins at 9 p.m. Tickets are $10 in advance at screenlandslams.com or $12 at the door.
