Super Bowl

SUNDAY

It might not have been the matchup most pundits predicted, but it certainly shouldn’t lack for excitement. For the first time in Super Bowl history, a pair of brothers — the Baltimore Ravens’ John Harbaugh and the San Francisco 49ers’ Jim Harbaugh — will go head-to-head as coaches. The 49ers, a team that earned its spot at the game in New Orleans by staging a wild comeback against the Falcons in the NFC title game, will start eclectic young quarterback Colin Kaepernick, who will be making only his 10th career start against a Ravens defense that shut down Tom Brady and the Patriots two weeks ago. The Ravens, meanwhile, hope to send retiring (and controversial) linebacker Ray Lewis out on top. Kickoff is set for 5:30 p.m. on CBS.

Science of Rock ‘N’ Roll

FRIDAY

GenKC, the Kansas City networking group aimed at bringing young professionals together, celebrates First Friday with a music-inspired evening at Union Station centered on the venue’s new “The Science of Rock ‘N’ Roll” exhibit, which examines the scientific and technological factors behind music and the music industry. The event also serves as an opportunity for locals in their 20s and 30s to mingle in a laid-back environment. Admission, which includes access to the Union Station exhibit and appetizers, is $8 for GenKC members and $12 for non-members. Go to genkc.org for more information.

Calexico

SATURDAY

The spacious Americana of Tucson’s Calexico evokes the harsh beauty of the Arizona landscape, and they’ve built an impressive discography of customary albums during the last fifteen years. Even without the benefit of a significant hit, Calexico’s reputation as a quiet but consequential band continues to grow. Bahamas, the beguiling project of Canadian guitarist and singer/songwriter Afie Jurvanen, opens the show. Tickets to the 9 p.m. show are $18 in advance and $20 on the day of the show.
