If you Google the words “Mongol Beach Party,” the only pages that pop up involve the horn-infused Kansas City rock band that formed in 1989 and broke up in 1992.
The words “mongol,” “beach” and “party” aren’t routinely combined. New bands that want to get noticed — and don’t want to be buried in a Google avalanche — could learn something from Mongol Beach Party. Here’s how the six-piece band came up with its name, according to singer Christian Hankel: He and bandmate Jeff Freling were trying to figure out a name without much luck. “One day at lunch, he and some of our friends were sitting around, riffing on a beach-party scenario, eventually arriving at a vision of Annette Funicello dancing with a fur-clad Genghis Khan. What was the point? Who knows? However, during the conversation, someone uttered the words ‘Mongol Beach Party’ and we were thenceforth named.“Funny thing is, the name really described us and our music quite well. We were known for our incessant musical attack. We played fast and furious — Scott (Easterday) and Billy’s (Belzer) rhythm section was fierce, the horns kicked you in the teeth, we would jump up and down all over the stage, nonstop. The story behind the name might not be very interesting, but we were the Mongol Beach Party. No other name would have worked.”In December, Mongol Beach Party reunited after a 17-year hiatus to play two shows at the Record Bar. The band also remastered its 1991 album, Toast, added a few rare tracks and released a new album: Toast: Reburn in 2008. This weekend, band members reunite again. On Friday, the band rocks Crosstown Station, and on Saturday it hits the Trails West Festival in St. Joseph.infobox-hr-separator /> infobox-head>Reunited again
