Who he is:
Capoeira instructorHow long he’s done it: About two months (He’s been training for 4 1/2 years)Kicking it old school: McCormack first spotted this traditional Brazilian sport, which combines martial arts and dance, in a movie in the ’90s. He began training during his senior year at the University of Kansas and now teaches the art form at Gold’s Gym, 4050 Pennsylvania Ave., twice a week. “Capoeira is all about energy,” he says. “You do things you never thought your body could do.”Night warrior: This Fairway resident, who logs hours at a Kansas City ad agency by day, trains hard throughout the week with the Kansas City chapter of Grupo Axe Capoeira. Rewards member: Capoeira keeps McCormack in top shape, mentally and physically. Not only does he reap enormous health benefits — he also learns strategy from the sport. “It’s like playing chess with your body,” he says. “You set someone up for a checkmate and knock them down.”Where to see it: You can catch Axe Capoeira performing at 7:30 p.m. Friday in the parking lot of Pizza Bella, 1810 Baltimore Ave.How to learn it: Hit up capoeirakc.com for class times.Top Events
