Who he is:
Kansas City branch manager of Blue Bell Creameries
How long he’s done it:
Six months. But he’s been with the Brenham,Texas-based company for eight years.
Freshest flavors:
Blue Bell makes more than 75 flavors of ice cream, but you’ll see 52 in grocery stores. A new introduction is Banana Nut Bread, banana ice cream with banana nut bread pieces, roasted walnuts and a cream cheese frosting swirl. “They have a half-hour to peel a banana and mix it into the ice cream before it turns brown,” Samuel says. Also debuting is Christmas Cookies: chocolate chip, snickerdoodle and sugar cookies in sugar-cookie ice cream, with red candy cane-shaped sprinkles and a green icing swirl throughout. The ice cream company has a bakery that makes cakes, cookies and brownies on the premises in Texas.
Inside scoop:
The No. 1 seller, as it is at most ice-cream companies, is vanilla, specifically the Homemade Vanilla, followed by Natural Vanilla Bean and Dutch Chocolate. Mint Chocolate Chip is the favorite of Tinsley, Samuel’s 2-year-old daughter. Samuel’s tip: Eat a carton of ice cream within a month, because that’s when it tastes best.
The cherry on top:
Blue Bell employees in the Kansas City office enjoy the perk of monthly taste tests, both from Blue Bell and its competitors. Coming soon to taste-testers: a vanilla ice cream with “a hint of rum and loaded with fudge-covered rum and malt balls,” also known as Ben & Jerry’s “Schweddy Balls.”
