News: Rail dreams prove costly

Ink

subhead>KC’s rail dreams prove costly

The area has been flirting with various kinds of rail transportation since at least 1993, a love-hate relationship that has cost taxpayers nearly $17 million, mostly in federal cash.

Kansas City is seeking $6 million in federal stimulus money to develop a 2 1/2 -mile streetcar route from the River Market to Crown Center. The Mid-America Regional Council is getting ready to take another look at running commuter trains on Missouri-side freight tracks. And light-rail advocate Clay Chastain promises to start a new light-rail campaign in October.

The money for studies has gone to consulting firms, big and small, that have weighed the costs and benefits of various proposals.

Includes studies of transit option from downtown to Odessa, Mo., regional commuter rail lines, commuter rail travel from Olathe to downtown, and travel options along I-35 in Johnson County.
