The day after Thanksgiving, Jason and Jenny Hascall transform their 1940s Waldo home into a winter wonderland.
Jenny sprinkles pinecones and colorful glass bulbs on shelves, stashes ice skates and wooden sleds in corners and surrounds the fireplace with a forest of faux evergreens.
Jason’s domain is the Christmas tree: Every year, he insists on hauling a fresh-cut Frasier fir from his home state, South Dakota. The couple decorate the Tannenbaum with fun ornaments (snowmen, cupcakes, even a miniature barbecue grill) given by her parents.
The Hascall home changes with every season. Jenny, a health care administrator, and Jason, a structural engineer, pull out lots of red, white and blue patriotic gear in summer to celebrate the Fourth of July. And in the fall, gourds of all shapes, sizes and colors practically overtake their snug three-bedroom home.
This time of year, the festive accessories set the scene for the Hascalls’ annual holiday happy hour, when they invite family, friends and co-workers over for cocoa, hot cider and fresh-baked cookies.
Could this couple be any more charming? Yep: They have two copies of each “Harry Potter” book on a shelf in their guest bedroom (“We didn’t want to share!” Jenny says) and a miniature schnauzer named Truman, after the Missouri-born president. Here’s what decks the halls of their adorable abode.
