Charles Gooch

This is Artificial Tangent, a source of all things nerd and subversive. Mostly we'll talk movies, but music, television, The Highlander comic books and the collected works of Danielle Steel are all on the agenda.

I've got something for everyone ... including a Gary Glitter song. Here are your mid-morning links with a heavy emphasis on a certain metal-clad superhero...

I didn't get to see "Iron Man" this weekend like planned. See, this stupid tornado formed in my back yard early Friday morning β€” no serious damage, just a lot of clean up and very, very little sleep. I did see "Speed Racer" this weekend β€” but it was for work and I can't talk about it yet. (You'll have to wait until Friday for it.)

I'll see "Iron Man." I just hope it can manage to stay in theaters until next weekend.

Ok, enough sarcasm. That was some serious box this weekend. How serious?

Someone has already started talking Oscar β€” a conversation that's going to get a lot louder once "Dark Knight" approaches and Heath Ledger's name will come up.

That crap about GTA IV getting in the way? Yeah, that happened.

Oh, and they've set official release dates for sequels. Should've seen that coming, huh?

Speaking of Batman...

Here's a look at the new trailer. Plus, Dark Knight pandamonium is only getting stronger. The trailers keep getting better, if you ask me. This one focuses a little more on the Rachel/Bruce/Harvey Dent triangle and what appears to be foreshadowing of what Harvey Dent will become.

Do you like comics...

The always relevant and innovative folks at EW.com have a list of the 19 best comic-book movies.

This just in ... superheroes are flawed. LA Times is there.

Do you like funny...

Staying on the movie bandwagon, here's a better look at one the films I'm most excited about, "Foot Fist Way."

But I can't possibly be more excited for this news: "Anchorman 2." The only hang-up? Getting the cast together. I don't know how to tell you this, but that's kind of a big deal.

Do you like the Coreys? (for the ladies)...

Corey Feldman will be reprising his role β€” sorta β€” in "Lost Boys 2" a straight to DVD flick. And now Corey Haim will be in "Crank 2" β€” sporting an awesome haircut.

Who needs NKOTB? The Corey's are back.

Do you like Spanish revolutionaries...

So, I know why I have his face on my wall and own two books about him and have watched the movie. But why does everyone else like Che?

Do you like good TV shows that turn into soap operas without warning occasionally...

Lost... what the hell was that? I'm not going to spoil it, cause it's highly plausible that you didn't get to watch the show as of yet thanks to egotistical weather panderers on KC tv. I understand that there will be love triangles on any dramatic show, but you can't do what they did last week in follow up to the action-packed week before. You just can't.

Do you like digital music...

Go here and download Nine Inch Nail's new album, "The Slip." Just came out this morning and it's 100% free. There are lyrics and everything... I'm still processing it right now. I'll try and post a review this evening or tomorrow morning.

The Cure will release one single a month β€” on the 13th β€” until the release of their new record β€” which if you guessed was their 13th, you deserve a cookie.

Do you like adaptations of 80s TV shows...

Then the news that they've making a big budget MacGyver movie should make you pretty happy. This must have Richard Dean Anderson in it. No substitutes.

Do you like the idea that beer can carry you through eternity...

An Illinois man will be buried in a coffin made entirely of Pabst Blue Ribbon cans. I haven't inducted anyone into My (Revolving) Hall of Heroes recently. This guy should be a shoe-in.

Do you like overtime winners in the Stanley Cup playoffs...

So, why do you have the face of a cold blooded mass murderer on your wall?
Did you go frame by frame of The Dark Knight trailer and see the (HUGE) spoiler of The Joker tossing (someone) off a roof, and the side of Dent's face is messed up in the scene where he's holding the gun...
...and thanks for the heads up on the new NIN album! I hadn't heard about this at all!
I have a Che poster because I went through a fairly unfortunate period in college when I seriously considered socialism and political protest. At the time, I felt there was no better form of little-guy against the big-guy than Che Guevara. I have since gained a more rounded impression of him β€” not all of it positive. But, when I first read The Motorcycle Diaries they spoke to me. And now, knowing more about his role in revolution and his transformation from idealist to near-tyrant I find mesmerizing β€” much in the same way that people study criminal-psychology or serial killers or fascism or fundamentalist religions. My point in making the post was, I have it as a memory of when I agreed with a lot of what he was saying and not because of a fashion statement or a Rage Against the Machine shirt.
That's fair enough. Most of us have flirted with or actually held those ideas strong. I must confess, I did, even against the most glaring reality of living for 22 years of my life in the "workers paradise" he and his comrade helped create. Cheers!
Iron Man is probably the best super hero movie script ever written. It was snappy and Downey was nailing lines left and right. The audience actually applauded not at something superheroish, but at the dialogue! It begs for a sequel. Not that that's bad. I just thought it was more of a conventional movie drama with some superhero stuff thrown in as opposed to a pure superhero movie. It sort of sputtered for me at the end, (especially since it clocked in at over 2 hours) so yeah Iron Man needs a sequel with more more superhero stuff to do.
