Charles Gooch

This is Artificial Tangent, a source of all things nerd and subversive. Mostly we'll talk movies, but music, television, The Highlander comic books and the collected works of Danielle Steel are all on the agenda.

The wait is finally over.

What to do this weekend if you aren't cool enough to hang with Cherryh.

It's ok, I'm absolutely not cool enough to get into the places Cherryh gets into.

Movie Events — stuff you have to leave your house for

Iron Man

Much type has been spilled — by me, I'll admit — about this flick. Sounds like it's deserves it. I'll be there tonight at midnight waiting with a group of fellow nerds. If you aren't already aware of why Iron Man is going to be good, you should check out this comprehensive — and boy is it ever — guide to Iron Man from the good folks at Cinema Blend.

Raising Arizona

It's First Friday, which means Screenland is showing a cult movie. This time around, they've got a Coen brothers classic. Also happens to be the best movie ever starring Nic Cage. (Friday and Saturday 9 p.m., Sunday 7 p.m.)

My favorite scene:

TV Events — stuff you can watch from the comfort of your own couch

Lost

Did we know the ship's doc was dead? I don't remember. Are bodies from the ship going to keep washing up ashore? Cause, that'd be cool. What did we know about Sayid's wife? I have this nagging suspicion that I've forgotten more about this show than I remember about my brothers growing up. Here's a sneak peak. (If it makes you feel better Travis, I'm rethinking my Jack hatred.)

Tivo Events — the stuff you record when you're out doing other stuff

The Blues Brothers

They do not make movies like this anymore. Even if you've seen it a few times, it's absolutely worth another watch just for the music and car chases. (Friday 7 p.m. on HBO Comedy)

Ghost Rider

You know how I said Raising Arizona was Nic Cage's best movie? Well, this is his worst. Only record this if you have a strong stomach for god-awful movies. I'm serious. This might be the worst thing ever filmed. I like bad movies and I can't even watch this one. (Friday 11:45 p.m., Starz)

The Wicker Man

The Nic Cage awful-movie trifecta is now officially in play. (Saturday 9:15 p.m. OUTMAX — it's a real channel, I swear)

Navy SEALs

Two words: Navy SEALs! (Saturday 10 p.m., AMC)

Gone in 60 Seconds

It's the TRIFECTA! Ok, it's not that exciting, since there are 23 awful Nic Cage movies floating in the ether. Not even the Coens could revive his career now. (Sunday 3:15 p.m., Encore)

Casino Royale

If you've got 3 hours, go ahead and give James Bond a chance. If you're a guy, you might want to avoid the getting-hit-in-the-balls scenes. They're pretty rough. (Sunday 4:30 p.m., Showtime Showcase)

Dr. Strangelove Or: How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Love the Bomb

Weird. A really, really good movie. On television. Is this a trend? (Sunday 6:35 p.m., HDNET Movies)

Fantastic Four: Rise of the Silver Surfer

Um, to answer the previous question, no. (Sunday 8 p.m., HBO)

Stuff that's actually awesome

Radiohead: From the Basement

Live Radiohead. Do I have to say anything else? (Saturday 11 p.m., VH1)

There's also some playoff hockey — go Pens — and some NBA too. Should be a good weekend to stay inside and ignore the cold weat— oh, wait, it's supposed to be nice. Crap.

You must be insane... "Valley Girl" is Nicolas Cage's best movie. It was all downhill from there. Oh, and that one where he thinks he's a vampire... yeah... that was horrible.
Gooch, you are way cool and I can't wait to see Ironman. I'm sure you'll beat me to it, so I'll read your review before I go.
