Why did TV news outlets desperately try to upstage the election?
Regardless of who you support (unless you support Al Franken) last night was an historic event. I'm just glad cable news stations were there to ruin it.
Every station had 34 analysts. Every station had touch screens they'll need to clean with clorox wipes this morning. CNN had holograms. CBS had huge puzzle pieces. MSNBC had 3-D columns rising from the floor. (I work in a newsroom, so I didn't catch a second of Fox News.)
Just when you thought you'd seen everything, huh?
My favorite moment was CNN anchor Anderson Cooper interviewing the holographic Will.i.am. ("Help me Will.i.am, you're our only hope!")
As for the election itself, it is a great day in America now that we have our first African-American president. (Here's a collection of photos from the mothership of last night.) Now, let's see if he can use his cultural capital to bridge the serious rifts in our society, pull our economy out of the crapper, restore our status as a respected nation internationally and, most importantly, give us what we really want: A playoff in college football.
In non-election news, I thought I'd bring you this photo I saw today on Deadspin.com. It's the greatest costume ever. A baby Mark Mangino.
In sadder non-election news, author of "Jurassic Park" and "Rising Sun" and creator of "ER" Michael Crichton died today. He was 66.
