MySpace and I have come a long way. I'm a MySpace convert, originally attracted to Friendster. I had a MySpace account early on, but it didn't pick up until '05.
Around that time, Friendster added a feature that allowed you to see who was "peeping" you. It was creepy, but it was also a good wake-up call to the privacy issues. MySpace allows me to carefully pick and choose who I let into "my space." I find the networking tool cutting-edge for keeping up with my favorite local bands, as I'm able to manage spam and feel control over my private profile. I'm also aware that MySpace is owned by Fox and requires me to "Internet responsibly."
Being a Facebook virgin, I cannot give this a fair review. I know the networking site started with an academic emphasis and membership previously required a .edu e-mail address. Since I was often an online student, I was detached from that campus dynamic. As Facebook expanded, I would get jealous when friends were toasting each other with virtual drinks and other "applications" that MySpace is only just recentlhy getting hip to. Facebook has had their own share of privacy issues, but users report less spam and porn stars than MySpace.
I may have lost a few online friends to that "other site" (Facebook). And unless I find the time to join, I no longer get to exchange blogs, music or comments with them on MySpace. But it doesn't lessen my experience with my friends in the real world.
Nikki's fav MySpace apps
1. LOL Cats
2. Ask a Librarian: Have you ever had a random question while surfing MySpace, but didn't want to be distracted by a Google search? Just type your question into the Ask a Librarian app and a live librarian will answer your question in a chat window.
3. Goodreads. And what about all those books in the closet? (I know Angela Kille and I aren't the only ones with a closet full of books!) Did you ever have the idea to sort them all, but never got past the As? The Goodreads app allows you to manage your reading lists online, write reviews and compare with your friends.
