You can exhale now, the election is over. We all experienced the campaign signs, robocalls and television ads, but I was surprised to learn about a new book when a library patron requested Change We Can Believe In: Barack Obama's Plan to Renew America's Promise by Barack Obama.
This book, released in September, served as a campaign tool outlining Obama's plans for change in America. But the election has passed, and now I recommend this book as means for holding our politicians accountable. How nice it is to have a hard copy of all of Obama's intentions so we can follow his progress and remind him of his promises. The book includes seven carefully crafted speeches from the 2008 campaign, plus chapters on the economy, foreign policy, American values and rebuilding our future.
Change has yet to begin. We may have missed the boat on holding George W. Bush accountable for his actions as President. But we are getting better at this politics stuff, and reading Change We Can Believe In will allow us to be a step ahead of the changes we'll see over the next few years. (In contrast to being caught off guard when it comes to war, hurricanes and the selection of the newest Supreme Court judges.) We can examine the issues that Obama feels are most pressing and decide what we are willing to stand up and fight for.
For further reading, learn about how Obama became who he is today in Dreams from my Father: A Story of Race and Inheritance.
