There was a time in my life when Labor Day weekend marked the unofficial end of summer. Pools closed, school revved back up. It was a depressing time for anyone under the age of 18.

But once summer took on a different meaning (i.e., no more unhindered freedom), it started mattering less when it began and ended. Now, Labor Day weekend means an extra day off work and what I am declaring the unofficial start of autumn events season.

• 'Sex and the City' Movie Live Comedy Roast: Don't hide the laughs and eyerolls when the "Sex and the City" movie plays at the Screenland Crown Center. The showing is part of the Screenland's Live Comedy Roast series, where movies are put through the ringer by improv comedy pros from CounterClockwise Comedy. When a leaky roof left The 816 Bicycle Collective without electricity for months last winter, members of the local nonprofit knew it was time to upgrade.

“We’re ready to move on,” volunteer Suzanne Hogan said. “The building has become an excuse for why we can’t be as good as we can be.”

The collective provides transportation to people in need by giving bikes in exchange for work around the shop. Everyone who gets a bike learns how to maintain and repair it. The collective works...
