Steddy P
At just 25, Kansas City emcee Steddy P is preparing to release his fourth full-length album, Style Like Mind. The record, out Friday, has contributions from artists along the Interstate 70 belt: Lawrence, KC, Columbia and St. Louis.
Steddy P, who rose to the top of Columbia’s hip-hop music scene while attending the University of Missouri, called in favors from Lawrence/San Francisco rapper Approach, KC’s Smoov Confusion, and DJ G Train, and St. Louis standouts DJ Mahf and Earthworms.
The Kansas/Missouri crew recently hit the road for a seven-state, 15-city tour in support of Style Like Mind. Catch this collaboration Thursday, when the tour stops at the Jackpot Music Hall, 943 Massachusetts St. in Lawrence. The show starts at 10 p.m., tickets cost $7 in advance or $9 at the door.
If you’re closer to KC, don’t worry. The Style Like Mind tour swings by the Record Bar, 1020 Westport Road, at 10 p.m. Friday. Tickets to that 21-and-over show cost $7.
New Directions jazz showcase
New Directions in Jazz, Experimental and Improvised Music Volume II goes down Friday at the Foundation, 1221 Union Ave. in the West Bottoms.
The showcase includes performances from four Kansas City bands: funky jam trio Mouth, nu-jazz foursome Mixed Method, experimental funk four-piece Brahe, and progressive six-piece Fiat.
The show starts at 9 p.m. Tickets cost $5.
Tech N9ne
One 2009 album release isn’t enough for Tech N9ne. The KC rapper is set to release his new album, K.O.D., on Oct. 27, barely six months after the spring release of his collaboration record Sickology 101.
Tech N9ne is known for his independent-artist status, launching his own record label, Strange Music, in 2002.
To promote his latest recording, Tech N9ne is on tour, packing the stage with Kansas City talent. Krizz Kaliko, Kutt Calhoun and Big Scoob are all set to perform as Tech N9ne takes the stage Friday at the Granada, 1020 Massachusetts St. in Lawrence. Doors open at 8 p.m. for the all-ages show. Tickets are $31 in advance.
The Get Up Kids
If you missed their farewell performance in ’05 and their Record Bar reunion last fall, dry your eyes — The Get Up Kids are back. Four years after calling it quits, the emo all-stars are reunited and touring to support the 10th-anniversary rerelease of their album Something to Write Home About.
The Kansas City-bred group formed in 1995 and their music went on to become central in the mid- to late-’90s emo wave, which included bands such as Dashboard Confessional and Jimmy Eat World. The band played frequently around Kansas City, recording a live album at the Granada in Lawrence and performing a sold-out farewell show at the Uptown Theater in July 2005.
The group performs at 8 p.m. Friday at the VooDoo Lounge, 1 Riverboat Drive in North Kansas City. Tickets to the 21-and-up show are $23 to $45.
