Margaret Cho was speechless — literally.
Recently, the provocative comedian lost her voice. It was in summer, as she was working on her first album of music — set for a 2010 release — that her pipes gave out.
If you’ve seen Cho’s comedy specials or VH1’s “The Cho Show,” you know she’s no good at keeping her mouth shut, especially when it comes to race, sex or politics.
Hopefully, Cho will be in tip-top shape by Friday, when she performs at the Voodoo Lounge at Harrah’s North Kansas City Casino & Hotel. In her show, Cho, 40, is a triple threat: She sings, dances and — of course — tells raunchy jokes.
Recently, we e-mailed the comedian about her new album, her TV career, and, well … anal bleaching.
Ink: Sorry to hear about your voice. What happened?
Margaret Cho: I overworked it and was singing improperly and I have some other issues. It’s terrible. But it certainly has forced me to be more creative, so it’s not all bad.
What’s the most annoying thing about losing your voice?
I cannot correct people!
I hear you’re working on an album for 2010. How’d you get the idea to do music?
I’ve been doing music for a while now so this is a collection of songs from shows like “The Sensuous Woman” I did a few years ago, as well as a lot of newer material. It’s funny lyrics with serious music. That was my intention.
Your show “Drop Dead Diva” was recently renewed for a second season. Congratulations. What do you like most about working on the show?
I love the cast and crew. … Since we have to leave our homes for Georgia to film the show, we created our own family, and that’s so nice.
“Drop Dead Diva” has tons of celebrity cameos. Which celebrities would you choose to guest star on the second season?
We would love to have Madonna and Cher. They are our deities.
On VH1’s “The Cho Show,” you tried anal bleaching and the G-Shot. Which was worse?
Oh, the G-Shot really hurt! Anal bleaching is totally easy.
Are you doing another season of “The Cho Show?”
Not at this time, although I loved it so much.
In the past year, you’ve really become a champion for women and self-acceptance. Where did you get all this confidence?
I don’t know. I just feel great and happy and beautiful, and I just turned 40. It’s so good!
