There’s really no reason you should already know about The Rhythm Lounge.
The new jazz club on Broadway hasn’t spent a dime on advertising. How about a Web site? Nope.
There’s not even a sign out front.
Yet the owners of this hidden-gem hotspot said it has been busy every night since its late-August opening.
In the space formerly occupied by Cafe Trio, The Rhythm Lounge contains metallic mosaic tabletops, black tablecloths and vintage-inspired artwork.
“It’s sexy, isn’t it?” partner Derrick Collins said. “It’s a cool chill-out spot to take a first date or a familiar date.”
No kidding. If intimate booths and dozens of tea lights don’t set the mood, the music will. The bar books neo-soul, jazz and blues acts throughout the week.
Yes. It’s definitely sexy.
The look: Partner Edwina Fountain-Jones takes pride in her interior design for the place. The chocolate-and-olive walls, artwork and cozy nooks add to what Collins called “a New York lounge” feel.
There’s plenty of seating, between a patio, a U-shaped bar, round tables and high-tops, cushy sofas and black vinyl booths. If that weren’t enough, you can also get cozy in the semi-private cocktail lounge tucked behind the dining room.
“That’s more of an area to sit and mingle,” Collins said.
The food: “Gourmet bologna” might sound like an oxymoron, but this dressed-up deli meat stars in one sophisticated sandwich ($8), which includes bacon, tomato, lettuce and black-pepper mayo.
Executive chef Rob Burns has developed a menu of soul-food-style small plates. Think catfish, crab cakes, scallops and scampi.
One crowd-pleasing appetizer, the black-eyed-pea salsa, “kind of goes with anything, from pork chops to over-easy eggs and grits,” Burns said.
If you miss Fish Fry Tuesday, sink your sorrows in a gourmet brownie ($7), served warm with a scoop of ice cream.
“I shouldn’t say this because I’m sure my mom’s going to read this,” Collins said, “but women go orgasmic over this brownie.”
The drinks: You won’t find any signature drinks here just yet, but you can’t go wrong with one of the bar’s “killer martinis,” promised partner Brandon Garrett, who suggested such standbys as the chocolate martini, appletini and lemon-drop martini ($9 to $10).
Nightly specials include Fat Fridays, a Mardi Gras-style celebration with Hurricane drinks, and Wine Down Wednesdays, when you can get half-priced vino by the glass.
