Top music shows this week

August 27, 2008 12:00:00 am

His Bobness — on a break from his XM radio show and doing commercials for Cadillac and Victoria’s Secret — stops in KC for the umpteenth time Thursday. This time, he’s performing a sold-out set at the Uptown Theater, 3700 Broadway. If you go, you might catch live rarities such as “Chimes of Freedom,” “Visions of Johanna” or “Lenny Bruce.” Dylan slipped them in the set lists of recent shows. Thursday’s show starts at 7:30 p.m. A nice scalper might be able to help you out with a ticket if you don’t have one. Face value is $61.50.

2. Pop Tarts Presents American Idols Live! Tour 2008If you thought “Idol” mania was over in KC, think again. The American Idols Live Tour and all the accompanying fanfare takes over the Sprint Center, and essentially downtown Kansas City, on Friday and Saturday. The tour brings “Idol” fans face to face with winner (and hometown boy) David Cook as well as fan favorites David Archuleta, Syesha Mercado, Carly Smithson and Jason Castro. Tickets cost $39.50 to $68.50. Both shows start at 7 p.m.

3. Gorgeous Frankenstein, Car Bomb, Bella Morte, The Corpses, Coctopus, DJ SweeneyIf you’re looking for the antithesis of the American Idols Live Tour — think goth and metal — go to the Record Bar, 1020 Westport Road. Here’s Saturday’s schedule: Kansas City death-punk band The Corpses perform an all-ages show at 7 p.m., followed by Charlottesville, Va., goth-synthpop act Bella Morte at 7:45 p.m. Long Island act Car Bomb goes on at 8:30 p.m., just before Gorgeous Frankenstein, a rock band featuring Misfits axman Doyle Wolfgang Von Frankenstein, plays at 9:30 p.m. Thrashing your locks at those shows sets will set you back $16.

Then, if you’re at least 21, stick around until 11:15 for KC punk-rock band Coctopus, followed by DJ Sweeney, who spins punk rock, metal and more. Cover at that show is $5.

4. RatatatRatatat brings danceable, beat-heavy arrangements of beeps and boops to Lawrence for an all-ages show. See the two-man electronic/rock/hip-hop act from Brooklyn along with Panther and E*Rock at 8 p.m. Sunday at The Granada, 1020 Massachusetts St. Tickets cost $13 in advance, $15 at the door.
