File under “L” for limited time.

After Joss Whedon finished “Serenity,” the writer/producer/director responsible for “Buffy: The Vampire Slayer,” “Angel,” and “Firefly” took a hiatus. He continued to write, penning a successful run on Marvel Comics’ “Astonishing X-Men” and continuing his Buffy universe at Dark Horse Comics. He directed a few television shows, most notably a Season 3 episode from “The Office,” “Business School.” But for all practical purposes, Whedon took a break from developing original properties.

It comes as a surprise that Whedon’s first original creation in four years is Dr. Horrible’s Sing-Along Blog (drhorrible.com), a hysterically campy musical about a hapless super villain and Penny, the girl he loves.

Neil Patrick Harris plays the titular villain, but scene-stealing credit belongs to Whedon mainstay Nathan Fillion as Captain Hammer, Dr. Horrible’s arch nemesis.
