What’s new in town, who’s making news
Walk-by recycling
Don’t trash that pop can. Aluminum and plastic recycling bins are sprouting up on sidewalks around Kansas City.
About 25 big, black recycling receptacles called PartnerBins are stationed around the high-pedestrian-traffic areas of the city. They’re in the City Market, the Crossroads district, Westport and the historic 18th and Vine Jazz District.
Dennis Gagnon, a Public Works spokesman, said the city eventually may place 500 of the business-sponsored bins if people begin to use them.
“A lot of people don’t even know they’re out there,” he said.
Gagnon said he expected more bins to pop up as the weather warms.
YouTube, meet Flickr
Yahoo will begin showing homemade videos on its online photo-sharing site, Flickr. However, analysts said the move may be too late to lure most people away from Google’s YouTube.
River Market rumblings
Several City Market tenants are uncertain about their future.
Tony Conforti has until June to relocate his Discounts Unlimited business.
Claude Page, development specialist for the city, said he doesn’t discuss leases, nor would he comment on the product mix except to say he is open to whatever will “bring the most traffic to the market.”
Carollo’s Italian Grocery and Deli has three years left on its lease but said the city wants it to cough up $20,000 for a new heating unit. The owners may relocate to the suburbs if a deal isn’t worked out.
